Statement of Shri Nand Lal Mehta, son of Shri Natha Lal Mehta, Indian, resident of Connaught Circus Building Lala Sarju Prasad:
Today I was present at Birla House. Around ten minutes past five in the evening, Mahatma Gandhi left his room in Birla House for the Prayer Ground. Sister Abha Gandhi and sister Sanno Gandhi were accompanying him. Mahatma was walking with his hands on the shoulders of the two sisters. Two more girls were there in the group. I alongwith Lala Brij Kishan, a silver merchant, resident of No. 1, Narendra Place, Parliament Street and Sardar Gurbachan Singh, resident of Timar Pur, Delhi were also there. Apart from us, women from the Birla household and two-three members of the staff were also present. Having crossed the garden, Mahatma climbed the concrete steps towards the prayer place. People were standing on both the sides and approximately three feet of vacant space was left for the Mahatma to pass through. As per the custom the Mahatma greeted the people with folded hands. He had barely covered six or seven steps when a person whose name I learnt later as Narayan Vinayak Godse, resident of Poona, stepped closer and fired three shots from a pistol at the Mahatma from barely 2 / 3 feet distance which hit the Mahatma in his stomach and chest and blood started flowing. Mahatma ji fell backwards, uttering "Raam - Raam". The assailant was apprehended on the spot with the weapon. The Mahatma was carried away in an unconscious state towards the residential unit of the Birla House where he passed away instantly and the police took away the assailant.

Sd/-N.L. Mehta/30.1.1948.

Having received the information I rushed to the Birla House to find the dead body of the Mahatma at room No. 3. Met Shri Nand Lal Mehta, his statement recorded and got confirmed after reading it out to him. Copy of the statement handed over to him. Came to know that the assailant was whisked away by the Assistant Sub-Inspector. It was a case of Section 302 Indian Penal Code. All the case papers were sent to the Police Station Tughlak Road and I got engaged in conducting investigations. A special report may be forwarded through the police station.

mam,
its very unfortunate that lots of policemen in this country remain irresponsible towards all the atrocities committed in the society. A policeman should behave like a friend to the common public. They should help the people.A policeman is also an humanbeing. He does not have any horns. Most of the poloicemen think that they should be given respect. First of all they must learn to give respect to the public. Its very sad that a common man today feels afraid to go to a police station to file an FIR. If police station itself is like this, then where will people go to give their complaints. An FIR has to be filed about a police officer in his police station itself..:).. is it possible..???.. before recruiting police officers for different posts they must undergo classes on value education. Its much more important than giving training to use weapons.. we cannot remain complacent just bcoz some police officers like you have remained honest and have done a good job..its just 0.1% in the country..what about the remaining..Its a big question...:)

Can you please post the complete investigation. Me and some of my friends who admire the Mahatma, all of whom are in the age group of 24 - 28 have a blog which is dedicated to clear the controversies that have been created with factual information. The investigation into the assasination of Bapu is mired with controversies with people saying that proper procedures of law were not followed for example it is alleged that there was no postmortem done. Since none of us is in a field allied to law, we are unable to clear these controversies and we are not able to find resources as well.

You may view the blog at http://appliedgandhi.blogspot.com/

Warm regards,

Raunak Maheshwari.

with so many words of gesture, i dont know if this matters to you, but you are definitely my inspiration. I am a muslim woman, who is a victim of dowry and domestic violence. everything said , but laws for indian muslim woman are too biased, muslim men get away easily after tearing the life of a woman and her children. i am too hopeless, but still for the sake of it, is it anything that can help change the situation of muslim personal laws? Dont we muslim women feel the partiality done on the pretext of muslim personal laws, while women of other religion have lot other rights as far as marriage is concerned? Is justice based on religion , is it not form of discrimination?

its a shame to see that every police officer from top to bottom are corrupt only a handful of them are not who are very high posts and common public can never reach them. Its a shame that we live in a civilized world the reign of kings and nawabs was better.

One mistake I want to point out in the translated copy of FIR is that the name of the assassin is wrongly typed as "Narayan Vinayak Godse" instead of his correct name "Nathuram Vinayak Godse."

Hope you would get the same corrected.

Unknown said...

Dear Sanjay Rane Ji,
I am reading available articles and other information available on internet. I red copy of FIR available on National Archive of India and noticed that "Narayan Vinayak Godse" is typed in English translated document instead of Nathuram Vinayak Godse. I was eager to bring this in the knowledge of readers but fortunately found your comments and feel that someone has noticed this mistake. There is original document on NAI but the same is in Urdu. I will try my best to read that as I red the language 40 years ago and presently require some practice.
